SOFT LIGHT
From springtime when new growth glows bright green through to summer flowers, followed by the dwindling autumn light catching the warm hues of late blooms and dying foliage, plants flourish in the sun’s warmth and light. All that absorbed energy fuels growth, produces food for insects and birds, and oxygenates the atmosphere before feeding the nutritious residue into the earth. Whilst experimenting with an old soft portrait lens I realized its unique properties offered creative possibilities beyond its original purpose. By controlling the degree of softness and careful selection and positioning, plants in certain light were infused with a soft radiant glow, and flare could be induced for creative effect. For me the results illustrate how beautifully these organisms express their dependence on this source of life and are given purpose by the sun, invoking in turn the uplifting response they bring to ourselves.
